Four ways to get seed into the ground
Every lawn is a different starting point — thin and patchy, bare dirt, or somewhere in between. The method should match the ground you're working with.
Overseeding
Broadcasting seed directly onto an existing, thinning lawn to fill in bare patches and thicken density without starting over.
Slit / Slice Seeding
A machine cuts thin grooves into the soil and drops seed directly in, giving strong seed-to-soil contact for faster, more even germination.
Hydroseeding
A slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water is sprayed on. The mulch is mixed right in, so moisture retention starts immediately.

Seed is spread evenly over freshly prepared, bare soil to establish a brand-new lawn from scratch.
Straw is the blanket that lets germination happen
Seed needs steady, unbroken moisture to germinate — and bare, exposed soil dries out within hours under sun and wind. A layer of straw mulch spread over freshly seeded soil traps that moisture underneath it, slowing evaporation and keeping the seed bed consistently damp instead of swinging between soaked and bone-dry.
Straw also moderates soil temperature, cushions seed against heavy rain washing it away, and shields it from birds and wind. Without that covering, even perfectly good seed can fail simply because the top layer of soil dried out before roots had a chance to form.
In short: straw doesn't grow the grass — it buys the seed the time and moisture it needs to grow itself.
Watering is what carries every method to a rooted lawn
No matter which seeding method was used or how well the straw is holding moisture, none of it finishes the job on its own. New grass needs consistent water for several weeks — through germination and well past the first mow — before its roots are established enough to handle drought, foot traffic, or a missed watering day.
Keep the surface damp, always
Light, frequent watering — often once or twice a day — so the top inch of soil never fully dries out while seeds are germinating.

Continue frequent, lighter watering as new grass blades emerge. This is when straw's moisture control matters most, since drying out now can kill seedlings that just germinated.
Shift toward deeper, less frequent watering
